Biography

Honourable Jon Reyes was first elected as MLA for St. Norbert in 2016 becoming the first Canadian-born person of Filipino descent elected to the Manitoba legislature and subsequently re-elected as MLA for Waverley in 2019.

He currently serves as Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration since January, 2022, and was most recently the Minister of Economic Development and Jobs. From 2016 to 2021, Jon was appointed Special Envoy for Military Affairs for the Province of Manitoba.

Prior to elected office, Jon served with great distinction and honour as a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces for 10 years including 5 years stationed on the HMCS Winnipeg as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy. For his dedicated military service, he was awarded the Special Service Medal (NATO) by the Canadian Forces.

Jon is an active community leader having taken on many leadership and volunteer roles including founder and past President of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council, director of the Kidney Foundation – Manitoba Branch, former member of the Manitoba Football Officials Association and Canadian Football League support crew member, as well as a highly successful business owner. He was awarded the Premier’s Volunteer Service Award for his 12 years of community service with various not-for-profit organizations in Winnipeg.

Family is very important to Jon. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he is happily married to his wonderful wife Cynthia and they both have two children, Reyna and Miguel along with two Alaskan Malamutes named Seger and Burkie.
