What is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation therapy uses radiation to destroy cancer cells (tumours). Radiation damages the genetic material of cells in the area being treated, leaving the cells unable to continue to grow. Although radiation damages normal cells as well as cancer cells, the normal cells can repair themselves and function, while the cancer cells cannot.

How long you will wait for radiation therapy depends on your treatment plan, where your cancer is located, and how far advanced it has become. Different cancers advance at different rates, some slowly and others more quickly. For some cancers, surgery and time for healing are necessary before you can begin radiation therapy. Your wait time will begin once your health care provider determines you are ready to start radiation therapy. For a description of the cancer care path, click here.
