Effective October 1, 2024, the Manitoba Prescription Birth Control Program (MPBCP) will pay for prescription contraceptives for eligible Manitoba residents, including most:
- Prescription contraceptive pills
- Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
- Hormonal implants
- Contraceptive injections
Eligibility
To get free contraceptives through the MPBCP, you need to:
- have an active Manitoba Health Card and
- not be eligible for 100% coverage through federal or other provincial drug programs.
Contraceptives for non-contraceptive use are also covered.
How it works
1. The prescription
Get a prescription from a doctor, a nurse practitioner or an authorized prescriber, at, for example, your regular clinic or a walk-in clinic.
Request a product that MPBCP covers. The MPBCP covers most prescription contraceptive products, as listed below.
To switch to a different type of contraception, for example from the pill to an IUD, talk to a doctor, a nurse practitioner or an authorized prescriber.
2. Present your prescription at a pharmacy
Present the prescription and your Manitoba Health Card at a pharmacy.
- The pharmacist will ask if you have other 100% coverage through federal or other provincial drug programs. If so, payment for your prescription will be processed through the other drug program rather than the MPBCP.
- If you are prescribed an IUD, implant or injection, you will need to arrange a visit to a doctor or clinic to have it inserted/administered.
- The pharmacist dispenses your prescription. The MPBCP covers the cost of the drug and fee for dispensing the prescription.
Covered contraceptives
If you've been prescribed a brand name contraceptive where generic versions are available, the MPBCP will cover the cost of the medication up to the price of the generic versions.

The MPBCP does not cover cervical caps, condoms, diaphragms, patches, rings or sponges. These products may be available free of charge at a community health location.
Medical abortion (two-pill combination)
Manitoba pays the medication cost for medical abortion and a fee to the pharmacy for any Manitoba resident with an active Manitoba Health Card and a prescription for Mifegymiso. All you need to do is present a prescription and your Manitoba Health Card at the pharmacy counter.
